WHY FERTIGATION IN DRIP IRRIGATION?

What is Fertigation?

Application of water soluble, chloride free fertilizers via pressurised irrigation system creating nutrient medium at the root system.

Fertigation is a method of fertilizer application with the irrigation water by the drip system. In this system, fertilizer solution is distributed evenly in irrigation water. The availability of nutrients is very high therefore the efficiency is more. In this method, liquid fertiliser as well as water soluble fertilisers are used. By this method, fertilizer use efficiency is increased from 80 to 95 percent.

Benefits of Fertigation in Drip Irrigation Systems:

  • Efficient Nutrient Delivery: Nutrients and water are supplied near the active root zone through fertigation which results in greater absorption by the crops.

  • Uniform Nutrient Distribution: Drip systems provide uniform water distribution, which means nutrients are evenly distributed across all plants.

  • Reduced Labor Costs: By fertigation method, nutrient delivery reduces the need for manual fertilization, saving time and labor.

  • Improved Plant Health: Consistent and precise nutrient delivery can lead to healthier plants and higher yields.

Fertigation Equipment:

Three main groups of equipments used in drip systems are:

    • Venturi
    • Fertilizer Tank
    • Fertilizer Pump

1) Venturi:

Construction in the main water flow pipe causes a pressure difference (Vacuum) which is sufficient to suck fertilizer solution from an open container into the water flow. It is very easy to handle, and it is affordable even for small farmers. This equipment is most suitable for smaller areas.

2) Fertilizer Tank:

A fertilizer tank mixes water with fertilizer for quantitative Nutrigation™. It is operated by the hydraulic pressure in the irrigation system and does not need an external energy source (subject to excess pressure available in the system). The desired amount of fertilizer placed in the tank is dissolved and injected into the irrigation system.

3) Fertilizer Pump:

The fertilizer pump is an optional component of the control head. The fertilizer solution is held in non-pressurised tank and it can be injected into the irrigation water at any desired ratio. Therefore, the fertilizer availability to each plants is maintained properly.

Conclusion:

Fertigation in drip irrigation systems represents a significant advancement in agricultural practices, offering numerous benefits in terms of efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. By understanding and implementing this technique, farmers can optimize their resource use and achieve better crop yields, contributing to more sustainable agriculture.
